With over 100 standard areas of concentration, Brown is ready to help you make the most of your intellectual abilities.
By the end of your fourth semester at Brown, you are required to declare a concentration (major) and choose a degree program. Undergraduates study in one of five degree programs: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.); Bachelor of Science (Sc.B.); the combined five-year A.B./Sc.B. program; the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME), a combined A.B or Sc.B. with an M.D.; or the Brown-RISD Dual Degree Program, a five-year B.A./B.F.A. program. To earn a degree, each concentration requires the completion of a certain number of core courses and electives.
You can also design, with approval, an Independent Concentration. If the standard departmental and interdepartmental programs do not suit the focus of your interests, an Independent Concentration can be a rewarding and challenging experience.
The Program in Liberal Medical Education offers a unique experience in medical education. Designed as an eight-year continuum, the PLME combines liberal arts and professional education to enable each student to develop advanced level competence in a chosen field of scholarship culminating in a medical degree. The Brown Medical School has two major goals for its graduates: that they be broadly and liberally educated men and women, and that they view medicine as a socially responsible human service profession.
The Brown-RISD Dual Degree Program draws on the complementary strengths of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) to provide students with a range of opportunities to develop and integrate academic and artistic work. The Dual Degree Program is five years in length. Students may receive a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree from Brown and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree from RISD. Prospective students must apply and be accepted to both institutions, and then be approved by a separate Brown/RISD admissions committee.
