First-Year Graduate Student Housing
First-year graduate students are offered a limited number of efficiency, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments located on campus. There will be no lease renewals or extensions in order to ensure that the units will be available for the next incoming group of first-year graduate and medical students.
A number of apartments are reserved by the Auxiliary Housing office for first-year graduate students who might encounter difficulty in traveling to Providence to find housing before fall classes begin. On or near-campus efficiency, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments are available through this program.

Description of Program
Brown University has established a program designed to assist graduate and medical students with housing in their first year at Brown University. To be eligible for this program, an applicant must be:
- A first-year graduate or medical school student
- Attending Brown University for the first time (those who attended Brown as an undergraduate or previously as a graduate/medical student are not eligible for this program)
To apply for one of these units, students must fill out the First Year Graduate Application Form and submit it to the office of Auxiliary Housing by the application deadline indicated on the form. Submission of an application does not guarantee placement in a unit. Placement is based on distance from campus, start date of housing contract, and receipt date of the application form. Any units remaining after June 10th, will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
On the notification date stated on the application, applicants will be notified of their housing assignments. Shortly thereafter, applicants will receive a rental agreement via an e-mail attachment, which must be signed and returned to Auxiliary Housing on or before the deadline stipulated. If the rental agreement is not returned by the Lessee, the applicant will lose the assigned unit, and the top-ranking applicant on the waiting list will be assigned the unit.
Students may not rent a two-bedroom apartment in this program for occupancy by one person or a three-bedroom apartment for occupancy by two people (students desiring to do so should apply for other Brown-owned properties). A two-bedroom unit must house at least two people (related or unrelated) and a three-bedroom unit must house at least three people (related or unrelated) per Brown’s program requirements. Per city ordinance, not more than four unrelated adults may occupy the same apartment. Roommates will be assigned to multi-bedroom units unless an applicant for a multi-bedroom unit meets the minimum occupancy requirement. For this reason, it is very important to:
- Name a preferred roommate, who must also meet the program eligibility requirements and who must also apply for the program, or
- State desired roommate characteristics
Applicants may also state that if they are unsuccessful in obtaining a studio or one-bedroom apartment, they wish to withdraw their application.
Brown University reserves the right to add, remove, or change dwelling units included in this program and also to terminate this program at any time subject to its obligations under the rental agreements executed under the program. Brown University does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, age handicap, status as a veteran, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.
