First Year Graduate Housing Program: Important Information and Pricing
The University, through the Office of Auxiliary Housing, has reserved a limited number of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments on or near campus for this program. These units will be leased to successful applicants for a period of approximately eleven months. There will be no lease renewals or extensions, in order to ensure that the units will be available for the next incoming group of first-year graduate and medical students. To apply for one of these dwelling units, students must fill out the First Year Graduate Student Housing application and submit it by the application deadline indicated on the form to the Office of Auxiliary Housing. Submission of an application does not guarantee placement in a unit. Because of the large number of incoming graduate students and therefore the anticipated high number of eligible applicants, a lottery will be used to assign units to qualified applicants. The week following the application submission deadline, a lottery number will be assigned randomly to each applicant; then in ascending lottery number order applicants will be assigned their first, second or third choice in priority order subject to availability until all units are assigned. Those who are not assigned a unit will be placed on a Waiting List in ascending lottery number order. Once the units have been assigned, the Office of Auxiliary Housing will notify each applicant by the Notification Date stated on the application as to whether their application has been successful or not. Successful applicants will also receive a lease, which must be signed and returned to Auxiliary Housing on or before the Lease Deadline stipulated. Applicants residing outside the United States will be notified by email with the lease form as an attachment. If the lease is not returned by the Lessee, the applicant will lose the assigned unit and the top-ranking applicant on the Waiting List will be assigned the unit. Students may not rent a two-bedroom apartment in this program for occupancy by one person (students desiring to do so should apply for other Brown-owned properties). A two-bedroom unit must house at least two people (related or unrelated) per Brown’s program requirements but not more than three unrelated adults (per City ordinance). Roommates will be assigned to two-bedroom units unless an applicant for a two-bedroom unit meets the minimum occupancy requirement. For this reason, it is very important to:
Applicants may also state that if they are unsuccessful in obtaining a studio or one-bedroom apartment, they wish to withdraw their application. Brown University reserves the right to add, remove or change dwelling units included in this program, and also to terminate this program at any time, subject to its obligations under the leases executed under the program. Brown University does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, age handicap, status as a veteran, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation. |
