Common Signs of Distress
Academic indicators:
- Written work or verbal statements that reveal excessive anger, agitation, rage, isolation, or despair
- Written work or verbal statements that are suicidal or homicidal in nature
- Written work or verbal statements that indicate severe family problems or personal difficulties (related, for example, to death, loss or rejection)
- Erratic attendance or performance
- Withdrawn or disruptive behavior in class
- Missed exams or assignments
- Repeated requests for extensions or accommodations
- Dropped courses
- Poor decision making
- Avoiding contact with advisor
Physical Signs:
- Extreme fatigue or lethargy
- Deterioration in hygiene or physical appearance
- Unprovoked irritability or anger
- Marked weight change
- Blood shoot or dilated eyes, smelling of alcohol or marijuana
- Prolonged sadness, tearfulness, depression
