How to Help Hurricane Katrina Victims
Hurricane Katrina has left countless people in the Delta injured, homeless, and without basic resources. Brown University’s Office of Chaplains and Religious Life (OCRL) joins with many around the country who are praying for the citizens of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida during this difficult time of grief and loss.
The human and physical devastation witnessed this past week calls for our response. OCRL and the Swearer Center for Public Service are encouraging people to consider giving to reputable relief efforts. A partial list of relief organizations posted on the New York Times website this week is provided here. OCRL will continue to add other interfaith relief organizations. Locally, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank is collecting funds to transport food and supplies to food bank warehouses, which will serve as distribution centers for the affected communities.
In addition, OCRL and the Swearer Center are interested in developing a conversation about how members of the Brown community, individually and collectively, can respond to this tragedy as the relief efforts progress. If you would like to be included, Rabbi Alan Flam (Alan_Flam@Brown.edu), a Swearer Center Senior Fellow and OCRL Senior Associate University Chaplain, is organizing this conversation.
