An Evening with Scotty McLennan Author of the Jesus Was a Liberal: Reclaiming Christianity for All (2009) Tuesday, November 3, 5:30 p.m., Wilson 105
During his talk, Scotty McLennan will discuss his latest book, which claims that “Jesus championed a progressive social vision of the future, rationality, tolerance and freedom from religious authority.” Thus, he claims that today, Jesus might have been called a “liberal.”
Learn more about Scotty McLennan.
McLennan, an ordained Unitarian Universalist Christian minister, received his M.Div. and J.D. from Harvard University. He practiced poverty law in Boston, during which
time he founded the Unitarian Universalist Legal Ministry. Prior to being name Dean of Religious Life at Stanford in 2000, he was the University Chaplain at Tufts University.
McLennan has been honored by his alma mater—Harvard Divinity—and others for his commitment to justice and peace. Yet, his college roommate, Gary Trudeau, perhaps gave McLennan and his mentor, the late William Sloane Coffin, the ultimate tribute by modeling the Reverend Scot Sloan in “Doonesbury” after the two.
A limited number of McLennan’s book will be available for purchase at the talk. This event is sponsored by the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life.
