Rabbi Alan Flam has spent his entire professional career on the college campus. In 1982 he came to Brown to serve as Associate University Chaplain and Executive Director of the Brown-RISD Hillel Foundation. On campus he is active in bereavement counseling, multi-cultural education, public service, gay, lesbian, bisexual civil rights, Arab-Jewish dialogue, and academic advising. He was the co-founder and first director of the Brown University Mediation Project (BUMP).
Rabbi Flam left his position at Hillel in June 2000 to lead a new collaborative project at Brown between the Swearer Center for Public Service and the Office of Chaplains and Religious Life that explores the intersection of religious and spiritual values with community work. He also serves as coordinator of the University Community Academic Advising Project (UCAAP), the Howard R. Swearer International Service Fellowship and other projects at the Swearer Center.
