Haffenreffer Grant of Mt. Hope

In 1955, the Haffenreffer Family Foundation donated their historic Mount Hope Farm estate to Brown University. The property presently consists of 372 acres of land in Bristol, RI on which a variety of programs and opportunities available.


Outing Reservation & Location

A 3,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose lodge may be rented for University use from April through Veteran's Day (November) each year. Please note that Brown University's School of Professional Studies sponsors a program at the Reservation that typically runs from early June through early August, meaning that the Reservation is typically not available for other uses. Please email the property manager for specific details at HaffenrefferOuting@Brown.edu.

A $300 host fee is charged to all events, including Brown-sponsored departmental and student events. This host fee covers housekeeping, parking and administration of your event. Events not sponsored by Brown must pay both the $300 host fee as well as a daily rental fee:

Daily Rental Rates (non-Brown organizations):
Monday - Friday: $300 / day*
Saturday/Sunday: $450 / day*
Holiday Weekends: $650 / day*
*plus the $300 host fee

Daily Recreational Use

Members of the Brown community (students, faculty, and staff) are permitted passive recreational use of Haffenreffer within the Visitor Policy guidelines during normal visiting hours (9 AM to sunset daily). Alumni are welcome to visit the property as well. Suggested activities might include picnicking, bird watching, hiking the shore, kite-flying, or a pastoral walk along the beach road.

Field Station Land Use

The land grant and its ecological resources have served a myriad of University functions ranging from art projects to wilderness EMT training. Portions of the property serve as field stations accommodating faculty-student research and academic study. Within certainly limitations, the Outing lodge can serve as an open classroom in conjunction with Brown class excursions.
