Brown employees who wish to take work-related courses from the Brown curriculum may be able to do so and have the tuition paid by the University if prior approval is obtained from the Human Resources, Employee Education Program-Training Office and from your supervisor. Brown employees who wish to take a non work-related course which is not paid for by the Employee Education Program should refer to guidelines for the standard Special Student program.
Paperwork to participate in the Employee Special Student Program should be completed no later than two weeks before the start of the semester.
If you have not already done so, the appropriate form should be obtained from Human Resources, (x2297, Third Floor, Brown Office Building) signed by your supervisor and then approved by the EEP/Training Office. Bring that completed and approved form to the Summer & Continuing Studies Office (42 Charlesfield St. (between Thayer and Brown streets ) with the completed Brown Employee Special Student Application prior to registering. We will sign your University registration card and direct you to the next step in the process, whether it is obtaining a permission slip from the faculty member, the academic department concerned or simply going to the Registrar's Office. It should be noted that permission to continue to enroll as an Employee Special Student is conditional upon maintaining an acceptable academic record. If you have any questions about this, please contact the Office of Summer & Continuing Studies.
Employee Special Students who drop a course after mid-semester (please contact Human Resources Training for the exact date) or who do not successfully complete a course are held personally responsible for paying the Special Student penalty fee of $250. The Employee Education Program will not cover this auditing fee, though it will cover the tuition charge if you pass the course or the partial tuition charge if you drop before mid-semester. If you decide to drop a course at any time, but especially if you decide to do it early in the semester, it is essential that you inform in writing:
1) your supervisor,
2) the EEP/Training Office,
3) the University Registrar and
4) the Special Studies Office
