Maturity and Independence

It is important to keep in mind that Summer@Brown is an academic program that requires a certain level of maturity and independence. Students are expected to manage their time appropriately and make good choices. The residential staff's emphasis on community-building and individual responsibility encourages students to develop the skills required for an enjoyable and successful pre-college experience, and promotes the development of strong friendships among the program's participants. For example, learning to solve problems on your own is an important college readiness skill and an empowering experience for pre-college students. Thus, if a student has an academic or personal concern, they should seek out the guidance of their instructor, a dean in the Office of Summer & Continuing Studies or their Resident Advisor for guidance or assistance.

Co-Curricular & Social Activities

Summer@Brown is first and foremost an academic program. When students are not in class, they are encouraged to take advantage of a robust calendar of co-curricular activities and social events. Although participation in extra-curricular activities is not mandatory, it is our expectation that pre-college students enrolled in our programs take advantage of as many workshops and activities as their schedule will allow.

Permission to Leave Campus Overnight

When leaving campus overnight, students are required to notify their Resident Advisor at least two days in advance. A parent or legal guardian must sign an Overnight Leave form before permission will be granted. Students who leave campus overnight without approval will be treated as a missing person. The Overnight Leave form is not intended as means to stay out after curfew.

Contacting Your Student

Telephone service is available in all rooms, but you must bring your own telephone and answering machine. Many students find that cell phones are a more convenient alternative. The Office of Summer and Continuing Studies cannot honor requests to track down a student except in emergency situations.
