Things to do before & after
SPARK:
Brown is located in central Providence, RI. Providence is the largest city in Rhode Island and the state capital. Three-and-a-half centuries of history are alive and well on the streets of Providence, as evident in the scores of immaculately preserved Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian houses located throughout the city. You and your parents may wish to arrive in Providence a day or two early or stay a few days after the program to explore Providence and Rhode Island. Some of the attractions you’ll find here include:
Providence Place Mall/Waterplace Park
This 13-acre mega mall has 150 specialty shops, restaurants, cinemas and an IMAX theatre. An architectural marvel, the structure spans a highway, a river and train tracks. On selected nights throughout the summer, Waterplace Park is home to WaterFire, an award-winning evening of art, music, and sculpture that takes place on the three rivers of downtown Providence.
Federal Hill
Entering Federal Hill is like walking into Little Italy, with Italian cafes, restaurants and bakeries.
Rhode Island School of Design
RISD, founded in 1877, is a vibrant community of artists and designers that includes more than 2,000 students from around the world. The RISD community and the RISD museum give Providence a world-class arts scene.
Providence Performing Arts Center
A restored theater and arts facility hosting first-class Broadway touring shows, plays, contemporary acts, concerts, and much more.
Newport
Newport bills itself as “America’s First Resort” and boasts a rich maritime history. The famous Cliff Walk takes you by the mansions of the gilded age, including The Breakers, the home of the Vanderbilt family.
