The Writing Requirement, Focal Point, Deans’ Open Hours

List of emails

Dear first-years,

Today is the mid-semester point. Pause a moment to take stock of how things are going, and to think about what help or advice might help you make the most of the rest of your semester. Also, take careful note of the updated terms governing Brown’s Writing Requirement.

* The Writing Requirement *

Earlier this week, Dean of the College Katherine Bergeron wrote to first-years to clarify the steps you must take to satisfy Brown’s Writing Requirement. Please read (or reread) this message carefully! All students must fulfill the Writing Requirement to earn the baccalaureate degree, so it’s vital that you understand how to go about doing so. Broadly speaking, students must make an effort to work on their writing at least once during the first half of their education and at least once during the second half. For first-years and sophomores, this means taking a course in English, Comparative Literature, Literary Arts, or one of the hundreds of courses across the curriculum marked “WRIT.” See Dean Bergeron’s email for a fuller discussion of how to satisfy the requirement over the four years.

* Meiklejohn Tip of the Week *

Thinking a lot about potential concentrations? Check out the DOC’s Focal Point at http://brown.edu/Administration/focal-point/ for ideas and information about all of Brown’s concentration programs.. Be warned that you might spend hours there!
