Final Exam Policy
Dear first-years,
This week is the final week of scheduled classes for the semester. Pre-registration ends at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the 24th, and Reading Period (optional and at the discretion of the instructor) runs from April 27 to May 8.
- Sophomore Advisor -
If you have not yet requested a sophomore advisor, please do so here: http://apps.college.brown.edu/sophomore_advisor_request/. Visit any dean in open hours for help thinking through your advising options for next year.
- Final Exam Attendance Policy -
Reading Period ends Tuesday, May 8, and final exams run from May 9-18. The dates and times of final exams are fixed by the Registrar so that students are not scheduled to take multiple exams at the same hour. Unless a course does not have a scheduled final exam, students are required to sit for the exam at the designated time.
The Dean of the College Office is solely responsible for determining whether a student's absence from a final examination is excused. To ensure equitable treatment of all students, students are excused from exams only for family or medical emergencies. (Please note that travel plans are never an excuse for missing a final exam.) Deans Stephen Lassonde, Kathleen McSharry, and Carol Cohen are the deans authorized to grant exam excuses. In emergency situations, students must contact one of these deans, who will determine whether or not an exam excuse is warranted. Course instructors are notified of exam excuses granted by the Dean of the College Office, and all make-ups are offered in the first few days of the upcoming semester.
Have a good last week of classes!
