Independent Concentrations

If, after discussing your academic interests with your sophomore advisor, concentration advisors, and other members of your network, you cannot identify a concentration that speaks to your intellectual needs, you may want to consider filing for an Independent Concentration. To do so, you will need to have conversations with faculty in the departments pertinent to your intellectual interests. After this, you must formulate your ideas about how to combine them in a concentration proposal, which you will submit to the Independent Concentration Committee. As is the case when declaring a standard concentration, you will list the courses you intend to take and explain how they can come together to form a cohesive course of study. The Committee approves proposals that represent a worthwhile course of study and that do not duplicate a standard concentration program.

If you are interested in declaring an independent concentration or have questions about the process, you should schedule a meeting with either Dean Karen Krahulik or Dean Furtado. Click here for more information about Independent Concentrations.
