Leaving College Hill...

Deadlines:
Semester 1: May 1
Semester 2: December 1

Is time off right for you?

Check out the Curricular Resource Center (Campus Center, Rm 228): The center is devoted to helping you with your research. Come chat with the leave-taking coordinators about making your dream a reality. There are plenty of tools to brainstorm leave-taking opportunities.

Meet with the Office of Financial Aid (JWW, 2nd Floor): If you receive financial aid, meet with a counselor to determine how your proposed leave will impact you financially.

How do you make your adventure happen?

Consult a Class Dean (University Hall and JWW, 3rd Floor): All students who take leave must consult with a Dean first to file the official Leave-taking form. Deans are also great people to discuss your plans for with, many of them are more than willing to offer their insight on any ideas you are having about your leave.

**Note: If you are a PLME Student: You MUST notify the Associate Dean of Medicine about your decision to take a leave of absence after you have consulted with a Class Dean.

Notify the following offices:

Office of Insurance and Risk
164 Angell Street, x 1703

Students enrolled in Brown’s student health insurance plan may be eligible to retain insurance coverage if they meet certain requirements. If you have Brown’s insurance, contact this office to find out your standing. Discuss with your parents how you will obtain health insurance if you are not on Brown’s plan.

Office of Financial Aid
JWW, 2nd Floor, (Box 1827), x 2721

Inform the OFA of your leave details. Contact Amanda Woodward (Amanda_Woodward@brown.edu), the Counseling Assistant Director. The OFA will cancel your aid award if your leave is prior to the start of classes or prorate your aid if your leave is effective after classes have begun.  Obtain important information about deadlines for reapplying for aid upon your return to Brown.  The OFA will mail important leave information to your permanent address on record.

Loan Office
Brown Office Building, 2nd Floor, x 3296

Contact the Loan Office if you have any federal or institutional (Brown) loans to complete loan exit counseling and to establish a loan repayment schedule.

Refund Policy Link

Check this website to read about Brown’s refund policy as it relates to the timing of your leave.

Residential Life
Wayland House, 27 Brown Street (Box 1864) x 3529

Return your key and notify ResLife of room vacancy to facilitate possible rental refunds. As a student on leave during Spring, you should select another student on campus to serve as your “proxy” in the housing lottery process for the semester you plan to return.

Student Service Window
Mailroom, JWW, 1st Floor

File a change of address card so mail can be forwarded. If you forget, all your mail will be returned to its sender, which is no fun for anyone.

** Note: If your permanent mailing address has changed, or changes while you are on leave of absence, you must notify the Registrar’s Office immediately. **

Office of International Student & Scholar Services
JWW, 5th floor, x 2427 (for International Students)

Look into issues relating to your visa or immigration status at the OISSS, JWW, Rm 510.
