Matched Advising Program
for Sophomores

Recognizing that sophomores at Brown lack a structured, peer academic advising option, in the Spring of 2009 the Curricular Resource Center and Dean of the College jointly introduced a new program geared to meet the advising needs of sophomores.

The Matched Advising Program for Sophomores (MAPS) pairs second-year students with junior and senior mentors for one-on-one support related to concentration declaration, course of academic study, research opportunities, summer internships, and general counseling.

In addition to one-on-one peer advising, MAPS will coordinate four panels throughout the program geared toward sophomores, and organize five focus groups that will provide MAPS mentees with a space to discuss the challenges, opportunities and experiences unique to sophomore year.

*Note: Sophomores must declare concentrations by April 14th.

2011-12 MAPS Timeline

• September 12th (First day of classes is September 7th) - Applications posted
• September 26th - Applications due
• October 3rd-11th (October 10th is a Fall Weekend Holiday) - Junior/Senior Mentors Interviewed
• October 13th- 16th - Decisions made
• October 16th- 18th - Decisions are sent out
• October 24th - Mentor/Mentee RSVPs due
• October 29th - Inaugural Brunch (Saturday)
• December 8th (First day of reading period) - Holiday Celebration
• February 1st (Classes resume January 25th) - Midyear Welcome Back Party
• April 11th or 18th - Closing Event

*We plan to have 1 panel before Winter break, and the other 3 upon return to campus second semester.

*We will hold focus groups 5 times throughout the program. Each mentee is required to come to one focus group. The dates will be set before the brunch and mentees will sign up at the brunch.
