The 2008 report of Brown's Task Force on Undergraduate Education argued for a “more inclusive concept of education—indeed, one so inclusive that conventional distinctions between general education and the concentrations, between the curricular and extracurricular, even between classroom and community need to be rethought.” Responding to this call, the Curricular Resource Center and Office of the Dean of the College are pleased to present Theories in Action—a three-day, campus-wide conference that puts students from all different disciplines in conversation with one another and with the community at large through the presentation of their capstone projects, which are developed from long-term leadership experiences, summer internships, grant projects, theses, fellowships, independent studies, final performances, or community service work. The conference gives selected senior participants the opportunity to engage campus and community members in their capstone project, publicly reflect on the project’s social relevance and learn to make academic and research experiences accessible and useful to the community at large. Students are grouped into panels with interdisciplinary themes where they work collaboratively to create engaging presentations through participation in skill-building workshops and feedback from peers, all while they network with others who share common interests and develop contacts for future collaborative efforts. Theories in Action is an opportunity to share knowledge with a diverse audience and to come together around the diverse curiosities, concerns, and passions of capstone achievements. Join us at Theories in Action on April 26th-28th, 2012! For more information or to apply starting December 1st, 2011, see www.browntia.wordpress.com. |
