Urban Education Semester

The UES application deadline for Spring 2012 is November 9, 2011.

Applications may be submitted at any time, but must be received by the deadline for each semester (generally, end of March for Fall semester; mid-October for Spring semester.)

The Urban Education Semester is an interdisciplinary academic immersion program in New York City. Employing the powerful lens of urban public schools in New York City to examine a network of disciplines including urban studies, public policy, community development, and systemic reform, UES combines demanding graduate-level study with hands- on, supervised fieldwork. The program offers undergraduate students the unique opportunity to receive a semester of academic credit while examining urban public education from the perspective of educators, policy makers, and academics in one of the nation’s largest and most complex school systems.

Participants spend three days a week working in public policy or classroom placements, while taking a full graduate-level courseload with the prestigious faculty of Bank Street College’s Graduate School of Education. Weekly group field trips and discussion group seminars, individual advising conferences, and monthly on-site visits by faculty advisors encourage participants to integrate their field placement experiences with the theoretical frameworks they examine in coursework.
