OFFICE POLICIES
Eligibility
The Dean of the College
Fellowship Office (DOCFO) works with Brown undergraduates and recent
alumni. (Brown graduate students interested in any of the
fellowships discussed on this site for which they may be eligible
should contact the Graduate School.)
Deadlines
Brown deadlines are firm.
In the case of internal deadlines for national competitions,
Brown's deadlines are set to insure that we can meet the external
deadlines established by foundations. All parts of your application
must therefore be submitted on time.
Pay particular attention
to the pieces of your application you are not producing yourself
such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and other documents
that may be required. It is your responsibility to make sure
that all of these materials arrive to meet the deadline. You
can call (3-2538) or email Jeanette
Spirito to inquire about the status of your supplemental materials.
Note:
Our office can order your official Brown transcript for external
fellowships that we administer, but you need to sign a transcript
authorization form so that we can request it from the Registrar.
Make sure that you request your transcript at least two weeks in
advance of the deadline.
Submission
of Hard Copies
Applicants must submit
both electronic (when applicable) and hard copies of their applications
by the due date. Even when there is an on-line application,
typically we must also submit a hard copy. Our office cannot
assist students with the printing of applications.
Open Fellowship
Hours and Advising Appointments
Dean
Dunleavy holds open fellowship hours on Thursday afternoons
2-4 and general open hours on Monday afternoons 1-4. If
you are unavailable during these times, she also sees students by
appointment. Call Jeanette Spirito (3-2538) to make an appointment
with Dean Dunleavy.
Support
Writing Fellowship Essays
Dean
Linda Dunleavy and Fellowship Writing tutor Heather Fielding are happy to work with students
on their fellowship essays. (Note that Dean Dunleavy is not
able to read drafts of essays for internal Brown Fellowships such
as the Arnold and the Baker/Emery.) Students should call Jeanette
Spirito (3-2538) to schedule an editorial appointment if they would like feedback on an essay.
Students are encouraged
to work consistently with one person in our office on their essays
rather than schedule various appointments with different individuals.
(At the same time, we encourage students to consult with
their professors and others for input.) After an initial meeting
to work on a fellowship essay, follow-up writing appointments may
be limited to two per student depending upon demand. Students
who schedule follow-up appointments will be required to bring substantially
revised drafts to those meetings. It is important to engage
the suggestions that emerge from any writing consultation into the
next version of the work the writing tutor sees. Students
who fail to rework their essays between consultations may forfeit
the opportunity for follow-up appointments.
Editorial support through
e-mail is available on a limited basis and only by prior arrangement
with the individual with whom the student is working on his or her
essay(s).
