Description

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government’s premier scholarship program, enabling students to conduct research, study, or teach in over 160 countries around the world. Congress created the Fulbright Program in 1946 with the mission to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. There are two basic types of grants: Research Grants and Teaching Assistantships. Research Grants support individually designed projects which may include independent library/archival, laboratory and/or field research, or university coursework in virtually all subject areas, as well as classes in a music conservatory or art school. Through these activities, grantees meet and work with people of the host country, sharing daily life as well as professional and creative insights, learning with them and from them. Teaching Assistantships offer opportunities for grantees to teach English conversation and American literature/culture in elementary, high school, or university classrooms. In most programs, the teaching commitment is approximately 12-20 hours a week; therefore, students also create a self-proposed “side project” (research or study) as part of the overall project. Teaching assistantships in English are available in Andorra, Argentina, Belgium/Luxembourg, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Applications may be made for one country only. Under exceptional circumstances, students may submit projects that require a primary country site for their study or research, as well as a secondary and even tertiary site. This option is only available to selected countries within world regional programs; applicants should refer to the IIE website for further information and country availability.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

U.S. citizens who will hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent prior to undertaking the Grant are eligible. In most cases, candidates must be proficient in the language of the proposed host country. Selection is based on the academic and/or professional record of the applicant, the validity and feasibility of the proposed study project, the applicant’s language preparation, and personal qualifications. Preference is given to candidates who have not had prior opportunity for extended study or residence abroad, but such experience does not disqualify candidates. Study abroad experience in the country does not reduce the candidate’s chances of receiving a grant. An application can be greatly strengthened by a letter of acceptance, affiliation, or endorsement from the person abroad who will guide or supervise the applicant’s proposed study project.

Benefits

For one year, Fulbright Grants generally provide round-trip transportation; funding for language or orientation courses (where appropriate); tuition in some cases; book and research allowances; maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; and supplemental health and accident insurance.

Application Procedure

Download our brochure, "Applying for a Fulbright Grant," or the Fulbright recommendation request form.

Download information on Spanish language evaluation.

Candidates should go to Fulbright’s IIE website and register for the on-line application. There is a single application form for all Grants, both Research Grants and Teaching Assistantships, and this entire application needs to be filed for the internal review process at Brown. Additionally, Teaching Assistantships to Austria (by separate application - see IIE website) are available through the Austrian Ministry of Education.  As mandated by Fulbright, Brown convenes a committee of faculty and deans that review all applications and interview the candidates. This committee prepares the campus committee report, which is part of the Fulbright application. All Brown applicants must be interviewed by members of Brown’s Fulbright Committee. The campus process is evaluative on the one hand and supportive on the other. The committee provides candidates feedback on their student applications. After the committee review and interviews, students can make last minute changed to their applications based on the committee’s suggestions. Ultimately, all applications will be forwarded to the national competition. All applicants must submit a complete application by the campus deadline. This includes the original application (signed) and six additional printed copies of:

  • The complete application
  • Statement of Grant Purpose
  • Personal Statement

And one copy of the following

  • Official Brown University Transcript and if applicable, transcripts from other institutions you have attended (domestically and abroad)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Letter of affiliation from your host country

All application materials can be hand delivered to University Hall Suite 213 or sent to:

Dean Linda Dunleavy
Chair, Brown Fulbright Committee
Box 1828, Brown University
Providence, RI 02912

After the committee evaluation and interview, the final application (electronically and in hard copy) must then be submitted to the fellowship office a few days in advance of the national deadline.
