Pre-Orientation Programs and Special Activities for New Students

Building Understanding Across Differences (BUAD)

Saturday, August 30, 2008 from 12:00 noon–4:00 pm.  BUAD provides incoming students with structured opportunities to discuss issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, class, religious affiliations, disability issues, and intersections of differences.  Meetings throughout the year allow BUAD participants to continue these conversations and to identify ways of fostering community on campus. Information and registration instructions are online at http://students.brown.edu/BUAD

International Orientation Program (IOP)

Thursday, August 28 through Saturday, August 30, 2008.  Hosted by University administrators and current Brown students who are members of the International Mentoring Program, International Orientation provides critical information regarding academic expectations, campus life, and student immigration and visa policies.  Instructions for registering to participate in International Orientation will be sent in a summer mailing to students.  Additional information is available on the International Mentoring Program website at http://students.brown.edu/imp/.

Third World Transition Program (TWTP)

Tuesday, August 26 through Saturday, August 30, 2008.  TWTP is a community building event for entering students that promotes interracial understanding.  Held prior to the full Orientation program, the program helps entering students identify and increase their awareness of issues encountered by minority students in a predominantly white institution.  The program is open to all students.  Instructions for registering to participate in TWTP will be sent in a summer mailing to students.  Additional information is available on the website of the Third World Center at http://www.brown.edu/TWC/.

University Community Academic Advising Project (UCAAP)

Wednesday August 27 through Friday August 29, 2008.  Students apply in June to be part of UCAAP and are matched with Academic Advisors who encourage them to think about the connection of academic study with work and service in the community.  UCAAP is a year-long program that has been designed to encourage students to embrace community participation, reflection, and civic responsibility as central parts of a Brown education.  The program starts during Orientation when UCAAP students and their advisors participate in the Institute on Service and Community.  Instructions for applying for UCAAP will be sent in a summer mailing to students.  Additional information is available on the website of the Swearer Center for Public Services at http://swearercenter.brown.edu/whatwedo/ADVISING_UCAAP.html.
