UTRA FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Am I eligible to do an UTRA?

Any Brown undergraduate can apply to the UTRA/Odyssey program, as long as he or she will be an enrolled student at the time of the fellowship.  The Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) has its own research funds for students in the program, although PLME students may apply for Odyssey support.

I want to take a class this summer, can I still do an UTRA?

Partial UTRAs are available for students who want to take a class over the summer. Interested students should talk to a Dean for more information.

Who can I talk to about doing an UTRA?

All students interested in the UTRA and Odyssey programs are encouraged to talk also with either Dean Karen Romer (207 University Hall), Dean Margaret Klawunn (207 University Hall), Dean David Targan (201 University Hall), or Dean Majorie Thompson (for the Hughes Fellowships; 122 Arnold Lab) to discuss ideas. Once you have identified a faculty member interested in nominating you and settled on a topic, you and your faculty partner can develop your ideas further and submit a formal proposal.

 Are UTRA's paid or unpaid?

Grant awards carry a stipend of $1,000 for the semester, and $3,000 for a full summer.

What is the expected time commitment when doing an UTRA?

Both Teaching and Research Assistants are expected to work an average of 12 hours per week during the academic year, or 35 hours  a week for 10 weeks during the summer.

What's the difference between the different types of UTRA programs? Which program should I be applying for?

The UTRA Programs page contains a detailed description of the different programs. There are also a number of resources available at Brown for More Information.
