BrownMed/Downcity Express is a daytime shuttle specifically developed to provide transportation between Brown/RISD and the hospitals, via downtown and the Jewelry District. The free service is available to students, faculty, and staff of Brown and RISD and of the hospitals affiliated with the Brown Medical School. Passengers must show ID before boarding the shuttle van.

BrownMed/Downcity Express operates Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, except for summer hours when it runs from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. It does not operate on Brown holidays and during the one-week Winter break. This schedule may vary around vacation breaks and at the beginning and end of the semester, which are different for Brown and RISD. Check this page for variations in the schedule at these times.

The BrownMed/Downcity Express vans depart from 70 Ship Street and will run at 10 minute intervals. The last departure from Rhode Island Hospital during the academic year is at 5:35 pm and during summer hours (May 27 - Aug 15, 2008) last departure is at 5:15 pm.

If you have been waiting at a designated BrownMed/Downcity Express stop for more than 25 minutes, please call the Transportation Office at 863-3157 to alert them to the fact that there is an interruption in service. Please have ready your name, the date, the exact time, and the location of the stop where you are waiting.

POLICIES AND DETAILS

  • Have your ID cards ready before entering the vehicle. You must show a valid Brown or RISD ID or an ID from a Brown-affiliated hospital to the driver when boarding. This is to ensure the safety of both our drivers and our riders.
  • If you damage the BrownMed/Downcity Express vehicle, you will be billed for the repairs.
  • No pets.
  • No smoking.
  • No alcohol (in open or closed containers).
  • You are required by Rhode Island law to wear a seat belt when the vehicle is in motion.
  • You have the right to be driven in a safe manner and the right to be treated with courtesy and respect. You also have the obligation to treat safeRIDE employees with the same courtesy and respect.
  • safeRIDE reserves the right to deny transport to any passenger if, in the judgment of the driver, the passenger’s behavior is a danger to the vehicle, the driver, or other passengers.

By entering the BrownMed/Downcity Express vehicle, you agree to abide by these rules and regulations. Those who violate them will be denied service.
