General Information

Lost or Damaged Cards

If a Brown Card is lost, stolen or damaged, it should be immediately reported to the Brown Card Office, 401-863-2273, during business hours, or to Brown Department of Public Safety, 401-863-3322, during non-business hours.

If the loss, theft or damage of a Brown Card is reported during business hours, it will be immediately replaced. If it is reported during non-business hours, Brown Department of Public Safety will issue the student a temporary dormitory access card, and if the student is on a meal plan, he/she will have to sign and pay for meals until the card is replaced. (Upon card replacement, the student will be reimbursed for meal purchases at Dining Services.) A new permanent replacement Brown Card must be obtained from the Brown Card Office the next business day.

Immediate notification of a lost or stolen card will protect the on-line Declining Balance Account and campus access privileges. The computer codes that control the account and access stripe will be deactivated as soon as the card is reported lost or stolen ensuring that no one will be able to use the account or access privileges. However, money applied to the vending stripe is just like cash. Since it is not controlled on-line, it cannot be protected if a card is lost, stolen or damaged. Anyone will be able to use the cash amount on the vending stripe. The Brown Card should be protected the same way a credit or debit card would be protected.

Stolen, malfunctioning or accidentally damaged Brown Cards will be replaced free of charge. Lost cards and cards deliberately damaged or damaged through negligence will be replaced at a fee of $10 for the first replacement. The fee for subsequent replacements will increase by $10 for each instance, e.g., a second Brown Card replacement would cost $20. The maximum fee for a replacement Brown Card is $50.

The Brown Card should be treated with care. Stickers, holes, creases, worn vending stripes, etc. will render the card inoperable. The Card should not be left in direct sunlight or on a radiator, and should be kept away from magnetic fields and other debit/credit cards containing magnetic stripes. These simple precautions will protect the card and its value.

New and replacement IDs are available Monday - Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm during the academic year and Monday - Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm during the summer at:
