Center seeks nominees for two public service prizes

The Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service seeks nominees for two awards that recognize students' community service - the Derek Canfield Barker Prize and the Yat K. Tow Prize. Nomination letters from faculty and administrators must be delivered to Peter Hocking, Swearer Center, Box 1974, 25 George St., by 5 p.m. Friday, April 26.

The Derek Canfield Barker Prize recognizes Brown students who have shown qualities of leadership, who have triumphed over adversity, and who have worked to bring the Brown community together through community service. Two $2,500 prizes are awarded to a man and a woman completing their junior year. To qualify, students must have participated in a sport at Brown. The sport may be on an intramural level. Nominees will be asked to write an essay about their motivations for doing community service while at Brown. The prize was established in 1994 through a gift from Richard C. Barker '57 and Abbie D. Paterson '57 in memory of their son, Derek.

The Yat K. Tow Prize is awarded each year to a junior, graduating senior or graduate student who "shows promise to continue developing as an outstanding citizen of the United States as evidenced by past or current community service activities and/or academic work in the area of international understanding." The recipient will have maintained a consistently strong academic record with no less than a B average while at Brown. Preference is given to a foreign-born student who has either recently become an American citizen or is about to become an American citizen.

The prize was established in 1991 by the family of Yat K. Town '41 in his memory. Born in Canton, China, Tow emigrated to the United States at the age of 10 to join his father and grandfather in the Chinese restaurant business. Tow was leader in R.I. civic and business affairs.
