- Leonard Schlesinger, professor at Harvard Business School and member of Brown class of 1973, will become senior vice president for development. He also will hold a faculty appointment as professor of sociology and professor of public policy.
- Scientists find the solar system's hottest surfaces on Jupiter's moon Io. The findings, reported in the weekly journal Science, were made by a team that included Brown professor Jim Head.
