- Is American culture still primarily Judeo-Christian? Where does one draw the line between religious practice and religious fundamentalism? These questions and more will be addressed in "One Nation Under God? Spiritual Life in America," the annual Brown University/Providence Journal Public Affairs Conference, which opens Feb. 21 with a lecture by Desmond Tutu.

- As media began to report on a possible cluster of
autism cases in New Jersey, Martha E. Lang of Bio-Med picked up her telephone and dialed. She had in mind another town where parents
understood the trials of raising a child with autism. It was information she learned interviewing parents in Leominster, Mass., for her sociology dissertation, and Lang wanted health officials and reporters in New Jersey to know about it.
- Striving to improve planning for capital projects and facility renovations at
the University, the administration recently established new procedures for
soliciting and reviewing those proposals. Those procedures were outlined at the Feb. 2 faculty meeting.
- In hopes of giving peace a chance, Brown students who are members of PEACE - Promoting Equality and Community Everywhere - mentor
youngsters at two city schools. PEACE also is planning a symposium on diversity.
- Padding down the hallway, head up, mouth open and tail wagging, Maddie tramps
into the small bright room to visit patients receiving chemotherapy. Maddie is part of the complementary care offered to enrich the quality of life for those
undergoing treatment.
- Community Directors find a way to overcome the isolation of graduate student life while benefiting undergraduates living in the dorms.
- Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat who has been described as "one of the
most courageous persons the civil rights movement ever produced," will speak on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
