Roland Garant: Campus Police Officer

Faces of Brown is an occasional feature to introduce the Brown community to colleagues.

Age: 57

Marital status: Married for 22 years, one son

Working here since: 1978

Hobbies: Watching sports and keeping baseball stats

What is your background? Worked as an equipment coordinator in the Newport Naval Base for a couple of years. After leaving the Navy and leaving as a Vietnam veteran, I worked at an air pollution plant in Fall River called Unico Environmental for almost eight years and worked myself up to a foreman.

What attracted you to Brown? Someone mentioned that they needed someone as a building guard at Brown Police and Security and at first I was not interested. I was in uniform for too long. But after Nixon closed the naval base, I gave it more thought. I was hired as a building guard at List Art. I moved up and became a security guard and then a police officer. It was a job at first, but once I was here I saw a lot of potential and really liked Brown.

What has kept you here? I love working and dealing with the students and the people here. I love interacting and helping the community at Brown.

Worst part of your job? I really love my job, but I guess I can say getting up so early to come to work.

What is the best part of your job? Again, dealing and helping people. I really look forward to coming to work.

Do you have a professional philosophy? I try to look for the positive in each individual I interact with. Every human being has a positive attribute. Human beings aren't entirely bad.

Do you have a personal philosophy? I treat others the same way they treat me.

What is the worst stereotype folks have of Police and Security? Folks only see the uniform and think we cannot to relate to them. Many people just have a natural dislike to figures of authority and that bothers me because we all have to answer to somebody.

If given the opportunity to say one thing to the entire community what would you say? Let's communicate.
