Faces of Brown is an occasional feature to introduce the Brown community to colleagues
Age: 38
Marital status: single
Working here since: On March 27, 1982, I was hired as a building guard. In 1985, I was hired full time as one of the crime prevention/investigators, and as of 1986, I was promoted to the full-time crime prevention officer.
Hobbies: boating, scuba diving, photography
What is your background? Before I came to BUPD, I worked as a special officer in the crime prevention unit for the East Providence police for four years. Before that I worked as tow truck operator and mechanic for AAA.
What do you do? I am involved in the physical security of Brown. In April and October I conduct lighting surveys of the entire campus. I specifically look for areas that need a lighting upgrade or new installations. I also conduct the Bike Registration Day held on the The College Green in April and in September. I meet with all the incoming students while attending their orientations and am very involved with the University Card Access System and the outdoor emergency telephone system with the blue lights.
What attracted you to Brown? The challenge of the job from municipal to campus law enforcement.
How did you see that being a challenge? Dealing with the different cultures. At Brown there are people from all over the world.
Worst part of your job? Once I had to identify a body of a missing visiting student when I worked in investigations; and the death of a fellow officer, Joseph F. Doyle.
What is the best part of your job? Watching my efforts have results on campus, such as increased lighting in dark areas and the implementation and continuation of crime prevention and awareness programs.
What is the worst stereotype folks have of the department? Some people think we are a department of untrained security guards when in fact we are a very highly trained department.
