What attracted you to Brown? I want to be a police officer; this seems like a good avenue to seek that. Brown's reputation as such a well-known and respected institution was also very appealing to me.

What has kept you here? My desire to be a police officer. I love it here. Brown is like a city. ... I really enjoy working with the students at this point in their lives.

Worst part of your job? At midnight on weekends watching students after carelessly drinking and having to call EMS to treat them. I feel bad in the sense that they can die or kill themselves drinking. Watching students being transported to R.I. Hospital for detox is very scary to me, especially when I see my children in their eyes.

Best part of your job? The interaction with the students and meeting people from all parts of the world. When I talk to people outside of Brown they can't understand the life that is lived at Brown and how fortunate we are in being able to interact with people from all over. I consider myself very lucky.

What is the worst stereotype folks have of this department? That we are intolerant with the drinking policies and that we are out to get students. For those who aren't used to authority, it makes it difficult for them to deal with a friendly authority such as us.

If given the opportunity to say one thing to the entire community what would you say? We are all one. I am a Christian and Jesus' message is that we are all the same, no one is better than anyone else. ... I would love to initiate mechanisms in which BUPD and the Christian community could work together. - Damaris M. Castillo-Lopes
