Spencer S. Haddow, Police and Security

Faces of Brown is an occasional feature to introduce the Brown community to colleagues.

Age: 32

Working at Brown since: Feb. 15, 1999

Hobbies: rock climbing, backpacking, soccer, tennis, photography, film and English literature

Background: I grew up in London.

What is your professional background? I was a counselor for several years with youth at risk and drug-abusing adolescents.

What attracted you to Brown? Its academic reputation and diverse community.

What has kept you here? The positive campus environment. Brown is an exciting and dynamic place to work.

Worst part of your job: The least pleasant aspect of my job is the responsibility to confront people. It is merely a professional obligation; strictly business. One has to confront when there is reason for concern.

Best part of your job: The autonomy to work with the Brown community on many different levels

If given the opportunity to say one thing to the entire community, wht would you say? I encourage people at Brown to invest in this community and aspire to a greater sense of University spirit. Also I urge people to understand that the role of Police and Security is one of defined authority, with the ultimate goal of providing a safe and civil environment. I like to think that we provide leadership in the promotion of appropriate conduct, order, safety and civility - leadership which supports, complements and nurtures the University's mission.

If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be? I feel tht our department is on the periphery of this community. I would like to see Police and Security undergo greater assimilation within the University.

What has been one of the highlights during your time with the department? The occasions on which community members express their appreciation for my department's work.
