ake plans now to attend the 5th annual Celebration of Community, "Strategies for a New Era," on Tuesday, April 10.This years event is sponsored by the Office of Training and Development, the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action, the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services, the Office of the President, the Staff Advisory Committee, and the Mittlemann Family Directorship at the Center for the Study of Human Development.
Mildred Garcia (left), associate provost of academic affairs at Arizona State University West, a noted speaker on diversity and pluralism, and an author/editor of "Affirmative Actions Testament of Hope: Strategies for a New Era in Higher Education," will deliver the keynote address at a noontime luncheon for registered participants.
Before the luncheon, a team of faculty and staff will facilitate discussion groups at several campus locations from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Registered participants will discuss Brown's examination of diversity issues, as well as Garcias book.
Garcia will speak again at 4 p.m. in Salomon Center in a lecture open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow this event.
Copies of Garcias book will be distributed to participating staff and students before her arrival on campus. On the evening of April 9, Garcia will meet with student groups on campus for a dessert/study session to discuss her book and the role of affirmative action in higher education.
