K. Sacks

Kenneth S. Sacks, professor of history

“Paul Revere's Ride” by David Hackett Fischer. “Beautifully written and exhaustively researched, ‘Paul Revere's Ride’ shows what Revere actually did (much more than most of us thought) and what he did not do (most of what Longfellow attributes to him). At a time of national tragedy and introspection, this is an inspiring read.”

R. Spaulding

Rachel Spaulding, executive assistant to the president

"The Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis. “This novel is a skillful blending of historical fiction and science fiction. Author Connie Willis sets up two parallel stories, one set during the Black Death of the 1300s and one set about 75 years from now, and links them with one time traveler. She leads the two sets of characters through situations that are remarkably similar, even 700 years apart. With complex, sympathetic characters and an incredibly compelling plot that is equal parts adventure, mystery, tragedy, and science fiction, this book falls nicely into the ‘can't put it down’ genre.”
