Awards and honors

Harold Kushner, professor emeritus of applied mathematics, is the recipient of the Bellman Heritage Award, presented by the American Automatic Control Council, for "his fundamental and seminal contributions to stochastic systems theory, which created the foundation of a substantial part of the field."

The award is presented to one person each year for the substantial lifetime contributions and is one of the most prestigious awards in the field. It is named for Richard Bellman, a pioneer in modern decision theory.

The council is composed of all of the U.S. professional organizations concerned with control and systems theory and practice, plus the International Federation of Automatic Control.

Associate Professor of Music Todd Winkler and Director of Orchestras and Chamber Music Paul S. Phillips have been selected as recipients of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Awards for 2004-05. The awards are granted by an independent panel and are based upon the unique prestige value of each writer's catalogue of original compositions, as well as recent performances.
