DENTAL INSURANCE

Brown University offers dental benefits to eligible employees through Delta Dental of Rhode Island. The waiting period for coverage to become effective is the first day of the month coinciding with or following three months of employment. Brown's plan, Delta USA, has two options: Comprehensive and Plus. Plus provides enhanced benefits for specific services, including implants and orthodontia for dependent children. (Please note that enrollment in the Plus option requires a two-year commitment.) Each option includes an in-network and an out-of-network component.

The chart below provides a summary of benefits for both plan options:

(The Plan pays 80% and you pay 20%, deductible applies)

- 80% coverage when care is provided by a participating provider for fillings, extractions and denture repair

- 80% coverage for composite (white) fillings for front teeth only

 - 80% coverage for composite (white) fillings for all teeth

- 80% coverage for periodontal surgery

- 80% coverage for enhanced periodontal services such as bone grafts and guided tissue regeneration

Major Restorative Care

(The Plan pays 50% and you pay 50%, deductible applies)

50% coverage when care is provided by a participating provider for crowns, prosthodontics and periodontics

 

Same as Comprehensive Option plus:

- Periodontal coverage for surgery and other services is enhanced to 80% (see above: Basic/Minor Restorative Care)

- 50% coverage for orthodontia* with a separate lifetime maximum of $1,500 per dependent

- 50% coverage for implants with a separate lifetime maximum of $3,500

*Effective January 1, 2008, the Plus option provides orthodontia coverage for both employees and dependents.

 

Additional features relating to both options include:

Pre-Treatment Estimates: For treatments expected to cost $300 or more, Delta Dental suggests that your dentist file a copy of the treatment plan BEFORE the service is rendered. Pre-treatment estimates are required before you receive treatment for crowns, periodontics or prosthodontics.

Dependent Coverage: Dependent children are covered through the end of the calendar year in which they reach age 19.

Student Coverage: Dependents, who maintain a student status as defined by the plan, are covered through the end of the calendar year in which they reach age 25.

Covered Benefits: Delta Dental payments are based on its allowance for a covered service or procedure.
