Bonuses, Annual Programs
University-wide Bonus Program
In the past, Brown University has committed resources to fund a University-wide bonus program. Human Resources notifies Senior Officers in the Fall whether a bonus program has been funded. Bonuses are approved by Managers, Directors and Senior Officers based on the following criteria:
Eligibility
All staff employees who are on the regular payroll are eligible for the University-wide bonus program, except members of the President's Executive Committee and individuals in positions grade 14 or above.
Criteria for Selection
Staff/team accomplishment(s) should meet one or more of the following general criteria:
- Accomplished unique and non-recurring endeavors requiring significant effort well beyond the designated scope of an employee’s position
- Developed or implemented a new or improved service or program
- Completed a significant project or a project milestone
- Performed exceptionally during the past year in a management, service or support role.
Excellence Awards
Excellence Awards are peer-nominated and peer-selected. The Excellence Awards recognize individuals and teams in the categories of: Citizenship, Diversity, Efficiency, Innovation, Managing for Excellence, Rising Star, and Service.

For Staff for Extraordinary Accomplishment
Bonuses for extraordinary accomplishment may be awarded upon completion of special assignments and/or projects.
GuidelinesThe extraordinary accomplishment of a special assignment and/or project should require considerable extra effort and time. Special pay for extraordinary ccomplishment may be used to recognize special assignments and/or projects which meet the following criteria:
- They are extraordinary in nature;
- They are non-recurring; and,
- They require significant effort well beyond a position's defined scope and working hours.
Note: Special pay for extraordinary accomplishment should not be used when an employee is filling in for someone at a higher level. See HR Policy #40.043 for more information about pay supplements.
