Ambassador Program- Class of 2008
The 2008 class of Ambassadors has embarked on an exciting adventure that will expose them the inner workings of Brown University. The first 25 Ambassadors met at the end of January to learn about the structure, history and governance of the University. The group also had the opportunity to learn more about each other and what is in store for them during the upcoming year.
The feedback from their first session has been exciting:
"One thing (among many) that I walked away with from Session I is the sense that Brown is much more than a University. It almost seems like a way of life. This was evident in the words of the Corporation members who deeply care about the future of Brown. The fact that they are not compensated for their efforts speaks even louder to their commitment. I also learned that every member of the Brown community, whether a staff member, faculty member, student, donor, etc. contributes to making Brown what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. "

Session 2: The Foundation
The focus of session 2 was on our distinguished faculty and the curriculum. The day was jammed with great information and hands-on activities. Ambassadors…
- Took on the role of Tenure Promotions & Appointments Committee (TPAC) members in a stimulated activity to reappointment and later to determine if tenure should be granted to a fictitious faculty member.
- Wrote proposals for Group Independent Study Projects (GISP).
- Navigated Banner to “register for classes.
- Connected with an informative panel of faculty and other guest speakers.”
- Received an invitation to attend an undergraduate class this semester!
After the session, one ambassador wrote:
“Session 2 was intense. We covered a lot of big topics! Session 2 provided answers/clarification about so many questions/uncertainties I have had since starting at BRU. I am glad to finally have at least a general understanding of Brown's curriculum and academic structure.”
Session Three: Life at Brown
On March 18th, the ambassadors became students and:
- Experienced Brown’s unique admission’s process and recruitment efforts and in a simulated activity, actually decided whether or not to admit 5 students to the university
- Learned about the role of the Division of Residential Life and Student Services
- Discovered the details of strategic plan for comprehensive improvements to the residential experience for students
- Toured the behind-the-scenes activities that go into feeding the campus community
- Experienced the roommate matching process, the housing lottery system, orientation, a mock disciplinary hearing, and a tour of the residential halls
One Ambassador wrote:
"Each session has exceeded my expectations. I really did not know what to expect when I applied to participate. I am amazed at the amount of information that I come away with after every session. The tour of the Ratty as well as the dorms were especially informative. These are tours I am confident others who have worked at Brown for years, even decades, cannot claim to have taken. We are truly seeing a part of Brown that largely goes unnoticed by many people. We are seeing and experiencing the inner side where the functioning of Brown really occurs."
