New Employee Checklist
Welcome to Brown! To get you off to a good start, the Human Resources Department asks
that you complete these steps to ensure a smooth transition into the Brown community.
Please contact us at 863-3175 to arrange an appointment to receive and complete the
necessary paperwork on or before the first day of your employment.
The First Day on the Job
Complete the following forms in Human Resources:
(3rd floor, Brown Office Bldg.)

- Workers’ Compensation form [Acrobat PDF]
Receive and sign for the following in Human Resources:
- Conflict of Interest statement [Acrobat PDF]
- Employee Responsibilities and Rights guidebook [Acrobat PDF]
- You & Brown Handbook [Acrobat PDF]
Complete the following forms from the Payroll Office:
(2nd floor, Brown Office Bldg.)
Tour your department and campus with your supervisor. [Campus Map] [Virtual Tour]
Activate your voice mail by calling Telecommunications at x3-2007.
The First Week on the Job
Attend New Employee Orientation in the Sharpe Refectory. [Download Orientation Schedule]
Visit the Brown Card Office in Emery Dorm to have your picture taken for your ID. [Brown Card Office]
Activate your email account [Account Activation web page] .
Connect with your Departmental Computing Coordinator (DCC) to ensure systems and
software are set up accurately. [CIS]
Review and clarify departmental and Human Resources policies with your supervisor. [HR Policies]
Review appropriate office policies and procedures.
Discuss goals and performance expectations with your supervisor. [Performance Development & Planning]
Ensure all Human Resources paperwork is complete.
Within the First Month of Employment
Revisit goals and progress with your supervisor.
Visit training.brown.edu to create your professional development plan.
Submit benefits enrollment forms.
After Six Months of Employment
Consider applying for tuition reimbursement for college courses taken through the Employee Education Program.
*The Form I-9 is a certification of eligibility for employment and must be completed by all new employees and by some employees who have had an interruption in service. Section I of the I-9 must be completed on the employee’s first day; Section II must be completed within 3 days. Failure to comply with this law can result in immediate termination.
