Off to a Good Start

New Employee Checklist



Welcome to Brown! To get you off to a good start, the Human Resources Department asks that you complete these steps to ensure a smooth transition into the Brown community. Please contact us at 863-3175 to arrange an appointment to receive and complete the necessary paperwork on or before the first day of your employment.



The First Day on the Job

Complete the following forms in Human Resources: (3rd floor, Brown Office Bldg.)

Receive and sign for the following in Human Resources:

Complete the following forms from the Payroll Office: (2nd floor, Brown Office Bldg.)

Tour your department and campus with your supervisor. [Campus Map] [Virtual Tour]

Activate your voice mail by calling Telecommunications at x3-2007.


The First Week on the Job

Attend New Employee Orientation in the Sharpe Refectory. [Download Orientation Schedule]

check Visit the Brown Card Office in Emery Dorm to have your picture taken for your ID. [Brown Card Office]

check Activate your email account [Account Activation web page] .

check Connect with your Departmental Computing Coordinator (DCC) to ensure systems and software are set up accurately. [CIS]

check Review and clarify departmental and Human Resources policies with your supervisor. [HR Policies]

check Review appropriate office policies and procedures.

check Discuss goals and performance expectations with your supervisor. [Performance Development & Planning]

check Ensure all Human Resources paperwork is complete.



Within the First Month of Employment

check Revisit goals and progress with your supervisor.

check Visit training.brown.edu to create your professional development plan.

check Submit benefits enrollment forms.



After Six Months of Employment

check Consider applying for tuition reimbursement for college courses taken through the Employee Education Program.




*The Form I-9 is a certification of eligibility for employment and must be completed by all new employees and by some employees who have had an interruption in service. Section I of the I-9 must be completed on the employee’s first day; Section II must be completed within 3 days. Failure to comply with this law can result in immediate termination.
