University Leaves Of Absence
Human Resources Policy: 30.028Staff members who have exhausted their leave of absence eligibility, job restoration rights or who have terminated active employment may request to be placed in a University Leave status for a period of up to one year. A person who is on a University Leave is no longer considered to be employed and has severed the employer-employee relationship with Brown University. The University Leave status conveys no right of job restoration, benefits or pay. The relationship is primarily a non-employment affiliation for the purpose of record-keeping and mutual contact during the period of time while in existence.
Eligibility
Staff members must have been previously eligible to qualify for a Leave of Absence (see policy #30.024) in order to be placed on a University Leave. The University reserves the right to approve, deny or terminate a University Leave status at its sole discretion.
Pay, Benefits and Job Protection Rights During a University Leave
During the period of a University Leave, former employees are ineligible for pay, benefits or job restoration rights other than the provisions for pay or benefits continuation such as COBRA and/or severance (see also HR policy #20.083 ).
University Services During a University Leave
During the period of a University Leave, former employees may be eligible to continue certain services such as library privileges and a University email account. Eligibility for, and use of these of, these privileges may be governed by other policy and may be modified or discontinued at the discretion of the University or for failure to comply with applicable guidelines.
Administrative Tracking and Documentation Responsibility
Former employees who have been placed in a University Leave status remain the administrative responsibility of the department where they last worked (i.e., the
department to which they reported when the University Leave was authorized). The administrative responsibilities of the department include coordinating the approval process with HR, tracking the duration of the status, and submitting documentation to change or terminate the status (e.g., Personnel Action Form (PAF)).
Duration
A University Leave is generally no longer than one year in duration. With the approval of the Human Resources Department, the University may authorize an extension of the duration.
