Salary Advances

Human Resources Policy: 40.032

Under certain circumstances employees may request that their salaries be paid in advance of the normal payment date.

Situations in Which Salary Advances May Be Provided:

  • Salary advances may be provided in unanticipated emergency situations when the need results from an extreme and urgent personal emergency that requires an employee to secure funds on short notice.
  • Salary Advances may also be approved for vacations when the vacation period is for five or more consecutive days and the normal pay day would occur during the scheduled vacation period.

Eligibility for Salary Advances

Employees working on the regular payroll may request a salary advance provided they have successfully completed three months of employment. Employees working on the miscellaneous payroll are not eligible to receive salary advances.

Applying for Salary Advances

To apply for salary advances, employees must complete a Salary/Stipend Advance, sign, secure the appropriate department signature, and send or hand-deliver it to HR Information Services of Human Resources, who will log it and deliver it to the Payroll Office for processing.

Salary Advances--General Information

Requests for salary advances should be made five days in advance of the date needed and advances will be issued no later than five working days following receipt in the Payroll Office.
Salary advances will only be issued within the pay period during which the salary would otherwise be earned. Only three advances of any type will be permitted during any single fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

Note: Early release of a paycheck is considered a salary advance.

The maximum advance amount is equal to an employee's net base pay of the previous pay period and the minimum advance amount is $100. The full amount of the salary advance will be deducted from the employee's next pay check.
