PSTC receives two major grants

Two major grants are heading to the Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC) to support its research and training activities.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded a prestigious five-year R24 Population Center Grant to support the center's interdisciplinary research infrastructure. The NICHD reviewers remarked on the dynamic and forward-looking atmosphere of population studies at Brown and noted the PSTC's particular strengths in African demography and spatial analysis. This grant totals more than $2.6 million.

The second award is a three-year, $500,000 grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. This award will be used primarily to recruit and train graduate students from the developing world, and will support activities that help to build the capacity for high-quality demographic research in developing countries. These activities include the short-term exchange of scholars and an annual colloquium that brings together scholars from Brown, the University of Colorado, the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, and the African Population and Health Research Center in Kenya to discuss emerging population issues.

"These two awards are very gratifying validation of the international reach and scholarly depth of the PSTC," says Professor of Sociology Michael White, who directs the center. "Our success in such competition is the result of a large collective effort, with many staff and faculty associates lending a hand."
