Biography
Matthew Gutmann has a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology (1995) and an M.P.H. (1997), both from the University of California Berkeley. He has taught at Brown University since 1997, now as Professor of Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, and Latin American Studies, with affiliation in Gender and Sexuality Studies and Development Studies. He is also a Visiting Researcher at the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en AntropologĂa Social PacĂfico Sur (Oaxaca, Mexico).In January of 2009 he was named Director of Brown's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. This September Matthew Gutmann was named the Vice President for International Affairs.
Interests
Matthew Gutmann studies gender, military conscription and militarization, health, ethnicity/race/nationalism, critical theory, ethnography and the Americas (especially Mexico and the United States).
