The Presidents of Brown University
The President of Brown University is in charge of the immediate government of the University and reports to the Corporation. He or she is a member of the Board of Fellows, as prescribed by the Charter of 1764. The Charter also ordered that the president “shall forever be of the Denomination called Baptist or Antepedo Baptist.” That requirement was removed in 1926. Henry Wriston, elected in 1937, was the first Brown president who was not a Baptist clergyman. (See Presidents entry in Encyclopedia Brunoniana.)
