Brown Community for Learning in Retirement announces fall offerings

The Brown Community for Learning in Retirement (BCLIR) will describe its eight fall courses and enroll new members at a noon convocation Monday, Sept. 9.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Brown Community for Learning in Retirement (BCLIR) will launch its fall program at a noon convocation and buffet lunch Monday, Sept. 9, in Alumnae Hall on the Brown University campus. Elmer Cornwell, professor of political science at Brown, will be the convocation speaker, addressing issues in the upcoming presidential election. Anyone interested in joining BCLIR is invited to attend.

BCLIR is a group of approximately 100 mostly retired persons of diverse backgrounds who share an interest in learning about a variety of subjects. Eight courses on topics chosen by members are offered each semester. Classes meet weekly for two hours, beginning the week of Sept. 16 and concluding the week of Dec. 2. Classes are conducted collaboratively, drawing on member contributions. The fall offerings include:

Tuition for BCLIR, paid by the semester or by the academic year, entitles members to participation in more than 100 courses offered by the Brown Learning Community as well as invitations to field trips, dinners and other social events. Certain Brown University facilities are also open to members, including the Rockefeller Library and the Orwig Music Library.
