Gregorian will say goodbye to his `adopted' school Thursday, June 26

President Vartan Gregorian will visit students and teachers at the Fox Point Elementary School on Thursday, June 26, between 11:15-11:45 a.m. The Providence School Board has been asked to rename the school, adopted by Brown's athletic teams in 1991, in Gregorian's honor.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown University President Vartan Gregorian will bid farewell to the students and teachers at the Fox Point Elementary School, 455 Wickenden St., on Thursday, June 26, between 11:15-11:45 a.m.

The school soon could be renamed in honor of the University's president: On June 9, Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. presented a resolution asking the city School Board to rename the school the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School at Fox Point in honor of the University's long association with the school's teachers and students. Since 1991, through Providence's Partners in Education Program, each of Brown's athletic teams has adopted a classroom at the school. Team members volunteer in classrooms throughout the academic year, supporting classroom teachers through tutoring and other activities. In addition, teams organize group activities. For example, the women's swim team invited its class to campus to use the pool, and the men's basketball team organized an after-school basketball clinic. The partnership also supports several school-wide events throughout the year.

Gregorian, who leaves Brown this summer to become president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, will be escorted by Fox Point Principal Mary Brennan and David Roach, director of athletics at Brown.
