PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design students will get into the Halloween spirit Friday night, Oct. 30, with a pumpkin-carving contest on The College Green at Brown University.

The festivities for the students begin around 6 p.m. under a 30-by-90-foot tent. A panel of judges, including RISD President Roger Mandle, will select winners. Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. will present the prizes at 9 p.m.

Afterward, some of the pumpkins will go to Hasbro Children's Hospital; others will be displayed at dusk on Oct. 31 at Waterplace Park, providing a "PumpkinFire" component to that evening's WaterFire.
