Microscopic view of a thin section of escoria showing clear glass and dark streaks, indicating that various compounds mixed and cooled rapidly to form the material. Created via an impact, the glass did not have enough time to be cast into an homogenous solid. The insert shows an eight-inch chunk of escoria. Its twisted and deformed shape indicates a violent formation.
