Samuel Nabrit, Brown University's first African-American Ph.D. recipient, earned his doctorate in biology in 1932. He has taught at Morehouse College and Atlanta University and was appointed president of Texas Southern University in Houston in 1955. Nabrit also was the first African-American to be elected a Brown University trustee. Appointed in 1967, he served until 1972.

A portrait of Nabrit, based on this photograph, is to be unveiled Friday, May 28. It will hang in Sayles Hall.
