Brown, Microsoft To Announce Pen-Based Computing Alliance

Brown University and Microsoft Research will hold a joint press conference at 1 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at the Watson Center for Information Technology to announce the first academic research program in the nation dedicated to pen-centric computing innovation.


PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University and Microsoft Research will launch the Microsoft® Center for Pen-Centric Computing at a joint press conference Monday, March 20, 2006. The press conference begins at 1 p.m. in Room 429A of the Watson Center for Information Technology, 115 Waterman St.

The first-of-its kind research program will cultivate new ways to combine the convenience of the pen and the power of computing. Rick Rashid, senior vice president of Microsoft Research, and Andries van Dam, Brown’s vice president for research, will speak at the event. President Ruth J. Simmons will offer opening remarks. Demonstrations of pen-based computing will follow.

At 4 p.m., Rashid will deliver a talk to the campus community titled “Betting on the Future.” The talk will be held in Room 117 of MacMillan Hall, 324 Brook St. Members of the press are welcome to attend. Editors: to reserve space, call the Office of Media Relations at (401) 863-2476.
