Office of the Vice President and General Counsel
Welcome to the website of the Brown University Office of the Vice President and General Counsel. On this site, we offer information about our office and about legal issues of interest and importance to the Brown community. We hope you will use our site as a basic reference on many legal topics and as a way to become acquainted with our office, its members, and the work that we do for Brown.
The Vice President and General Counsel and the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OGC) provide legal counsel, representation, and oversight of work on the wide range of legal matters affecting Brown University. Under the leadership of the Vice-President and General Counsel, Beverly E. Ledbetter, with the assistance of a Deputy and three Associate Counsel, the OGC advises senior officers, managers, deans, and faculty on legal and regulatory issues related to Brown’s activities and operations, including transactional matters, and dispute resolution, enabling Brown to legally operate with maximum flexibility.
OGC attorneys also represent the interests of the University in administrative and judicial proceedings. Outside counsel may be engaged by the General Counsel to provide additional expertise and representation when appropriate.
The attorneys within the Office are the attorneys for Brown University. The attorneys can not and do not advise faculty, staff, or students on personal legal matters.
The Office provides advice and counsel in a wide range of Legal Practice areas.
The Vice President and General Counsel also oversees the operation of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.
